Gugulipid ®

Gugulipid ® is the leading gum guggul resin extract. Gum guggul is collected from the shrublike tree Commiphora mukul, which is native to the arid areas in northern India.

Gum Guggul

Gum Guggul.  Gum guggul is also linked to myrrh gum and Boswellia serrata, another important resinous herb in Ayurvedic Materia Medicine. Gum guggul, often referred to just as “guggul,” has been used since at least 600 B.C in Ayurvedic herbal tradition. The plant is cited in Vedas, India’s holy scriptures estimated to be around 3,000 to 10,000 years old1. Modern research into gum guggul has begun in 1964, and G.V. has undertaken a series of trials. Satyavati.2 The basis for this study was an ayurvedic treatise written in Sanskrit which explains in detail a condition called “coating and obstruction of the canals.” Satyavati and others launched a sequence of trials to determine if the gum guggul referenced in the treatise would have any impact on the blood lipid level, due to the obvious analogy with the cardiovascular system. This launched a large number of research on pharmacology and clinical impacts of gum guggul.

Guggulsterone sterones

In the 1980s, Indian scientists conducted a systemic assessment of gum guggul resin as a group of lipid-based compounds called guggulsterols and guggulsterones. The herbs ‘ impact on cholesterol and blood fats has been identified by two members of this community, Z-guggulsterone and E-guggulsterone.1,3 An extract standardized for the guggulsterone content of gum guggul was then created by the CDRI in Lucknow, India. This extract is now the most popular type of gum guggul for use in clinical studies2, called “Gugulipid ®” Ultra Guggulow contains the Gugulipid ® standardized for 5 mg guggulsterone per 1000 mg extract.

Bioperine

The traditional Ayurvedic herbal formula includes the synergistic herbs of black pepper and long pepper. Piperine, an alkaloid, is the active ingredient in black pepper and long pepper. Experiments conducted to evaluate the scientific basis for the use of peppers have shown that piperine significantly improves the bioavailability of other substances.4 Bioperine ® includes 95% piperine obtained from the black pepper fruit. Several clinical double-blind studies have shown that Bioperine ® improves nutrient intake 5.

Benefits

  •       Helps maintain normal healthy cholesterol*

Research on gum guggles has generated a wealth of proof for the positive impact of this herb on cholesterol and blood fats in the past 30 years. Satyavati and her peers conducted preliminary research on rabbit fed hydrogenated vegetable oils to artificially raise cholesterol concentrations. In contrast to untreated subjects, Gum guggul rabbits were tested for normal cholesterol and blood lipid levels and healthy blood vessels2. A number of multicentric clinical trials tested for normal cholesterol in Gugulipid ®.6 Phase 1 studies were performed in order to determine extract safety. Phase II studies confirmed the efficacy of Gugulipid ® in standardizing overall cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides.7,8

  •       SOD-Protection, antioxidant activity*

In an animal studies conducted by CDRI, guggulsterones overturned the reduction in SOD (superoxide dismutase) activity that has occurred again. While these findings are preliminary, they also support the use of Gugulipid ® for cardiovascular health.
